MAHALA was the middle name of my beloved grandmother.
It translates to kindness and tenderness - two qualities that I want to sit at the heart of everything I do.
Kia Ora! My name is Pippa. I am from the UK, but my soul never truly found peace there, so I have been jet-setting around the world since I was 22. I am 35 now… yikes! In one mind, I cannot really comprehend where the time has gone, and yet in another, I am blown away by how much I have crammed into it.
I’ve lived whole novels in the UK, Australia, China and now New Zealand. And yet, somehow, it still feels like I am on the first page of Chapter One...
Travelling the world makes me feel richer - that, and my relationships, which I hold close and am immensely proud of. The places I have lived, the people I have met and the things I have discovered along the way have shaped so much of who I am and, ultimately, what MAHALA became.
So, what is MAHALA? Why start MAHALA now?
I am a very driven and creative person, and I have always felt a little sadness that unless you are talented - or even lucky - enough to earn a full-time salary from that talent, we seem to stop creating.
Perhaps it is a lack of time or energy. Perhaps we convince ourselves that there is no point past its earning potential. Or perhaps, somewhere along the way, we simply start believing that creativity has to be useful to deserve a place in our lives.
I have always been taunted by the phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none.” But maybe the point was never that I had to be the master. Maybe I could simply be the biggest cheerleader for myself - and for other creatives. MAHALA is, in many ways, an extension of that idea; a space where I can celebrate creative individuals - some of them being my own friends and family - and lift myself up in the process, too. Because perhaps being a Jack of all trades isn't something to be embarrassed about?
I have been so inspired by all the things I have seen around the world, and I wanted to create somewhere I could bring my finds, treasures and inspirations together in one place. I am specifically drawn to things connected to the ocean, as I have spent my whole life chasing an island lifestyle. I want to build a curation of beautiful objects that celebrate wonderful artists and designers, while creating a space where I can channel my own artistic desires, too.
THE MAHALA COLLECTION;
The collection is divided into three domains:
MADE × MAHALA
Where my own designs become part of the collection - pieces created by hand and inspired by the ocean, travel and the places that have shaped me.
MAHALA × [COLLABORATOR]
Where MAHALA meets independent artists and designers to create considered pieces and limited collections that celebrate different creative perspectives, brought together by a shared vision.
THE MAHALA EDIT
Products sourced by MAHALA from around the world - things I have discovered, fallen in love with and simply feel deserve to be shared.
And so here we are... MAHALA is my little corner of the world - a place where the things I love, the things I make and the people whose creativity inspires me can sit alongside one another. It is about giving ourselves permission to create, and remembering that we don't have to be the best at something for it to be worth doing.
So whether you are here to discover something beautiful, meet the person who made it, collaborate, or simply follow along… welcome to MAHALA.
